Paul Gilbert Lick Of The Week

Paul’s signature scary string skipping madness!

Thursday, 11. April 2013  -  by  Michael Baugh

This lick is quite a stretch for the fingers but with a little work and patience you’ll have a new lick that you can scare your friends with!

When it comes to string skipping it is important to practice slowly and focus on the picking hand to make sure that you are alternate picking, I see so many people struggling with these kind of licks simply because they down pick twice or up pick twice causing their picking hand to stumble and pick the wrong string.

Another overlooked issue is to do with how fast you practice. Guitar teachers the world over say the following words on a daily, sometimes hourly basis, “Play it slower” and “accuracy first, speed later”. Remember, in order for this lick to sound great fast, it needs to sound clean and in time when you play it slow, it’s like they say, “don’t run before you can walk” right?
